Default Fashion Week Handbags: Chanel
Like the rest of Chanel’s Spring 2010 collection, the bags that we saw walk their runway (barnway?) were more rustic-chic than classic Parisian. Whether that’s your thing or not, Karl Lagerfeld certainly seems to believe in it.

The problem with Chanel, though, is that for better or for worse, they have a lot of aesthetic history to consider when a new collection is designed, and Lagerfeld usually chooses to acknowledge that history. What that means is that mostly, Chanel doesn’t innovate. They do something different here and there, and a lot of their bags are quite lovely, but rarely do we see them starting new bag trends.

I don’t know if that’s a positive or a negative – it just sort of is. If you like their aesthetic, then I’m sure you’re completely fine with what they do and how they do it. If you don’t, there are plenty of alternatives on which to spend your money. There are a few unexpected things in this accessories, but mostly it’s just the same bags we’ve seen with slightly frayed edges. I can totally understand if that’s what they want to send to retail, but I also can’t help but wish Lagerfeld & Co. would embrace the fantasy of the runway a little bit more in the accessories department.

That IS disappointing, what have they done? All of the bags are far more fitting for the country or farm girl, not the classy, everyday woman. I think very first picture (one that looks like a basket?) is just awful. You can't see a classy woman carry that, everyone would think she's carrying a basket. And I don't think a normal person would think it's Chanel either.

I do like this bag, though. Kinda.

But everything else is just bad. Surely I won't be spending $2-$3K+ on these bags at all. Except for this black flap.

That wooly or straw material aside, I still wouldn't like any of these bags.

Harvest time, anyone? These bags look like hay and grass.

I love organic food, but organic bags...that's another story...

They are so summery and retro looking. Very different. I love them!

I think Chanel did come up with an original concept. The Portobello bag, even LV made thier version of it. Anyway, I like that Karl and his team stick with the classics and add a few twists. Thats why I buy Chanel, its timeless. Even the seasonal peices dont date . IMO. Also its very innovative to get people to buy the same type of bags for decades and decades.

ITA- what better test of time is there than to stick to classic style bags with small changes (like color or material)?

^^I agree. This is a VERY minute sampling of what Chanel does, can do and has done. They DO innovate. They're not just about Classic Flaps anymore. I am an avid and loyal Chanel fan and DO NOT own a Classic Flap. There's SO much more!!

Well, I don't like what I have seen from these pictures alone.

The name of the game for Chanel as well as Mr. Karl Lagerfeld, is re-inventing

what has been a timeless and classic bag. He is creative, innovative, and for

many many years the Chanel bag has been a must have in many a wardrobe.

My hat is off to him for his creative genius and taking that classic timeless iconic

bag to the sky and back. Long may he reign...

I love this whole collection, it's much more girly, carefree and laid back than the usual chanel collections and I can definitely see people doing this look in Paris or any other big city. It's sort of a modern take on the naivity and longing for a simpler life spirit that gave birth to le petit hameau in Versailles.
