Default Dirty, Filmy, Grey, Gross. HELP!

so my beautiful magenta work is about a month old now. i've been very careful with her. i've sprayed her with apple guard twice now and moisturized her beforehand with apple care conditioner. i've noticed however that the upper corner panels on the back have this gross diry filmy look to it that feels waxy to the touch and i don't know if it's from dirt or from the apple care. i read in one of these threads that it should go away with buffing but i've buffed quite a bit with this...leather shining cloth thing and it hasn't helped any. i don't know what to do! has anyone experienced this? should i get a different product that can clean this off? because no amount of apple care has helped but it's not really meant to clean. the pics below aren't the best but i hope it helps to show what i'm talking about.

back of the mirror treated with apple care:

front of mirror untreated (notice the brighter color):

left side is untreated, right side is treated (notice the slightly dirty look towards the top):

treated panel compared to untreated side of bag:

tried to capture the filmy murkiness and also show how dry it still is even with many many applications of apple care and lubriderm:

what am i doing wrong??!!

this is the main reason why i do not treat my bags. I just feel like all the elements that my bags go through will only make the leather better and better.

i don't have any advice since i've never gone through this but i'm sure somebody will give great advice. Goodluck! =)

maybe you've over-treated... that seems like an awful lot of product for only 1 month. Remember, the leather is already treated, it isn't sold in a 'raw' state so to speak. A new bag shouldn't need to be treated. A lot of people recommend not treating a bag at all because some have found it affects the integrity of the leather (while others have had no problems, of course). I'm not sure if cleaning it will help, but definitely give the leather a rest. Maybe with use, the film will wear off and your bag will be fresh again. I suspect you've used WAAAAAY too much product on it, and it needs to wear off a bit.

Good luck, your bag is (otherwise) LOVELY!

I feel the same way too & have avoided moisturisers of any kind near my bags. I do guard them with leather protector spray.

sunnibunni, Have you tried leather cleaner? Use sparingly over the entire affected area dabbing gently? As for the dry parts, I think most of Magenta 08 is known to be rather dryish. I also read that many experience the dry leather even with intense conditioning. I am not sure what would help but I hope someone does. Good Luck!

I have a Magenta PT. Its a bit dry too, especially at the corners. Lets see.. I mositurised it.. 3-4 times??.. with Apple conditioner. Its slighty better now. Im guessing its the dye they use, magenta seems to be a bit more problematic. Dry, crackly, thin leather, colour varies from dark to light. But urs look alright to me. DONT worry too much about it. Enjoy the bag!

Here is my take on things:

Your bag is overglazed, not dry.The crackly look is there because of the glaze. It should not be treated until the glaze has come off a bit, because the leather can't absorb all the moisture through the glaze coating. Therefore the product sits on top of the glaze and creates that film that you don't like.

I'd suggest you gently wipe your bag with a half dry baby wipe, wear your bag to break it in for a couple of months and only then will your bag need moisturising.
I never moisturise a brand new bag for that exact reason. Trust me, I've tried that on all my post 05 bags and it always works out nicely.

There is no glaze on a bbag.

That would be the finishing tanning process results.

However, it looks to me like this is a result of over-use of products.

So sorry you are distresssed about this..when I had a film on an '06 Camel City on just those corner panels I sat her down on my knee at night while I watched the news (and a few JUNK shows too!) and I kneaded and bent and otherwise tormented those corners for 10 or 15 mins at a time..at the end of the week they looked better than the rest of the bag and so (stop reading all sensitive owners) I changed tactics and sat and wrung the City bag just like you would wring out a wet towel..I did this 5 or 6 times in each direction..the City is now soft as an '05 and the filmy look is broken down and as far as I can tell is gone for good

I think Eliza is absolutely correct. Leave your bag alone for a while. Hopefully the Apple product will wear off.

Have you buffed it with a clean cotton cloth? When I treated my bag with the apple, it looked filmy, until I reread the directions and saw I had to buff the bag and the beautiful black came back from the grey filmy-ness. I think other tPFers have had the same problem. Keep buffing it in circular motions and it should fix the problem.
