Default Another question on dye jobs!
Hi! I'm new to the Balenciaga forum and loving it here! I did a search on this topic and found lots of responses, but nothing definitive. If a Balenciaga is dyed using only the Tarrago self-shine and not the penetrating dye first, will the paint chip and peel and make the leather "crunchy?" How well does it hold up over time without the penetrating dye? And can this be fixed or redyed somehow? If so, how would you fix this problem?
Thanks in advance!! Sorry if this is a redundant post

Welcome!

I can recommended to use the penetrating dye first, and then use the self shine dye afterwards. It is a lengthy process, but it's really important to prepare the leather first, so the dye can penetrate the leather. The self shine dye is just to give the colour intensity, as I found the penetrating dye to be quite dull once it had dried. This is just my experience, I have only dyed my Chanel bags, so it may be worth looking to see what results others have got using this process. It has been said that the self shine dye used on it's on can lead to peeling and cracking, and does make the leather a little more stiff. There are places you can send your bag for refurbishment like lovinmybags, but this can be quite expensive. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I used self-shine by itself on a wallet, and I quickly noticed areas where the color scratched off. I recently dyed a twiggy using the penetrating + self-shine method, and I'm very happy with the outcome. If you use the penetrating, you must use the self-shine afterwards in order to prevent color transfer. After moisturizing and letting the bag hang with my stuff in it, the leather softened up...no crunchy leather! Yay!

Thanks so much for your responses! Sounds like using the penetrating dye first is a must for the color to last. I really appreciate hearing back with your experiences
