I am starting to figure out what the center of the quilt will look like. I am going to use a combo of these two squares. I can post tonight what the four look like together. The colors are starting with tan, brown, and blue... and will slowly start incorporating greens!!

Oh, and I am using 9 inch squares. This will probably be 11x11 or 12x12 squares total. So I have 4 squares done.... only like 115 squares to go!

Ok, so here is an updated picture of my design. I am doing the design on graph paper... using a pen to draw each square design and then using color pencils to fill in the color that each piece will be -- based on the fabrics I had originally choosen.

Shows how big the quilt will be:

Here is a close up on the center that I am currently working on now:

And now that I have finished each of the squares pictures... here is what it looks like in fabric. I am completly stunned how close it looks to the real thing and it's really getting me excited to do more!!!

You are doing an EXCELLENT job! How beautiful!

I've dabbled a little in quilting but nothing major. I have the photos around here somewhere, maybe I'll post a thread of my own!

So cool!!

Do you actually create the pattern yourself or copy from a book/mag?

Thank you for the nice words!!

aki, I am sort of making up the pattern. I am using a book which has lots of individual block patterns, but I am mixing and matching them up in my own style and colors. That is why I am sketching it out on graph paper to see what it would look like first. Of course their are lots of patterns out there to use, but that would take some of the fun out of it

Ooh I need to get going on mine.. I've tons of squares already cut out, just need to start sewing them! MrFrankie gets cranky though because I'll take over the dining room table with just sewing crap EVERYWHERE... then when I put it all away it's such effort to get it all back out again, hahaha!

I have some beautiful Amy Butler fabric I'm using, it'll be lovely when/if it's done!

You're going great there, do you find it hard to keep the squares completely straight when sewn? I'm worried I'll wreck all my beautiful fabric on sewing things that won't lay perfectly flat and all that. I bought some calico on my last trip to civilisation though so will be practising on that first, as being miles from anywhere the stuffing up and ordering new fabric is an expensive exercise.

^ I totally know what you mean about piles of sewing stuff EVERYWHERE!! I have finally been confined to an office/craft room so that if it gets to be too much for my DH, he can just shut the door. Although don't get me wrong he is very supportive of my crafts -- he can see how happy they make me!!

I also do the same as you ... I cut a ton of stuff out... then going in to insane sewing and pressing mode! I find switching between sewing and cutting drives me crazy.

Your fabric sounds lovely... you should share a picture to give us other fabric hoarders a quick fix!!

I do have some squares coming out not completely straight -- and some of the pattern in each square isn't really perfect. I think that is going to come with experience and repetition of piecing certain types of squares. I would say go for it!! The first quilt I am making is for me... so it will be sorta nostalgic that way to look back on it in years and think how far I have come in my skill level. And while it may not be straight or one square bothers me because I could have done it better... when you start to put all the squares together... it looks AMAZING and you focus changes from the small details to the whole thing!!

Hope you take the plunge and just start sewing!!

KittyBag, I just checked in to see how your projects were going and I am amazed!!! Your design is so creative and your colors are gorgeous! You seem to have a natural talent for fabric art--I can't wait to see what else you come up with!!
