Ok, it has been done for a while, but living with three men it is never exactly picture ready! :)
I am so pleased with how it turned out..but a new problem has come about...
I do not know what to do here! I don't want to stain this because you have to do long strokes otherwise it turns out super blotchy, and that would be very difficult, especially under the bar area (which is not shown in the photo).
Oooh. I just remembered from one of the home shows I've watched. They have a magnetic paint you can use, then paint over it with chalk paint. So, you can use magnets to sticks bits on, plus you can write on it with the chalk.
What about venetian plaster for the back of the cabs? You can get some gorgeous colors and put a hint of gold in them and really warm things up. You could then put a focal piece on the "wall" and really make it something special.
You could almost certainly buy veneer to match the cabinets and apply that over the opposite sides of the cabinets. It will depend on what you want it to match. If you want it to match the walls, then that's a different issue, but if you still want it to look like the cabinets (since, well, it IS) then I'd either strip and stain it (yes, it would be tricky, but it could be done) or veneer it to match the fronts.
Looks so rich & beautiful on the problem area,I agree with the suggestion of sanding it and painting with an oil based primer and then I would paint it an intense dark color and get a few shelves that are narrow but deep enough to hold some beautiful stemware-make it a bar like area or some other collectibles there to incorporate it into the room-the other suggestion would be to get some of the new Crayola Chalkboard paint and then use it to scroll some cool words or a piece of chalk drawn art-I have a pic that gives a general idea of what they could look like although the example I have is a much v=brighter color than you probably want.
