I think the knitting help videos are great. Beyond that, learning how to read a pattern is necessary.

I just learned how to knit!!!
A great friend of mine showed me a little over a month ago, and I am working on a hat! There are 2 great shops about 10 minutes from my house where you can go and sit in comfy couches and drink tea and learn how to knit, its amazing!!! Everyone is so nice and always helpful to show you new techniques or just offer advice! After my hat I think Im going to make a scarf and then gloves to match! |

^ I learned to crochet again basically through a DVD that I bought. I tried one from the library a while back for knitting but didn't have any luck. I blame that on being left-handed and unless it's shown lefty style, I kind of struggle! Do any of you that knit have any good DVDs/videos/online media to recommend to get started? Maybe the one I had just wasn't very good. TIA!

I learned through classes and books, specifically "Knitting for Dummies" and "Vogue Knitting".

My mom taught me how to cast on, I learned basic stitches from online videos, and then I learned everything else from a Knitting for Kids book from AC Moore

Oh Diva, I hate when I get that frustrated and then when you do learn you wonder what was so hard about it.
You will get there!

My mom says that crocheting is easier too since it's with one needle. I only know how to knit one style but I'm going to learn others probably through youtube and stuff.

I remember when I was 10 or 11 and a lady taught me how to Crochet, I remember it being really easy. So, I assume it probably is a little easier than knitting.

Knitting is really very easy. Once you learn one of the many ways to cast on, it's only two stitches, a knit and a purl. Then there are many ways those two stitches can be manipulated and that's where a glossary of terms comes in handy. Those terms are standard, which is a good thing, so no matter what pattern you are reading the instructions that match a particular term will always hold true. Then there are rules, also standard, for pattern reading all having to do with what follows an * or what falls between ( ) and what gets repeated (X). Once you know the rules you're good to go. Granted, patterns have mistakes and there's no safety net there other than someone who's more experienced that can help you. Vogue has a great reference book but Knitting for Dummies is my favorite. It answers real questions in easy to understand language. I have found some of the answers in Vogue unclear to a novice knitter. The internet is another great resource. There are several knitting videos where you can follow along with your own yarn and needles.
It's nice to see an arts and crafts forum. I plan to visit frequently. And I'll be happy to answer (if I can) anyone's knitting questions. |
