And if anyone out there is an experienced knitter you can be the professor!

The Knitting Answer Book is another great book - it explains pretty much every question & situation a beginning-intermediate knitter could have.

The best advice I can given anyone learning to knit is to learn "Continental" style knitting, not the English method (throwing), because it is so much faster and easier on your hands to knit the Continental way. I was taught the American/English method and then re-taught myself the other way. I knit so much faster now and it is much, much easier, especially when you are doing ribbing or variations of stitches in one row.

Okay...I just started knitting for the first time tonight and here's what I've got so far. Really not making anything...just getting a feel for what you are supposed to do!

Another great series of books is The Knitting Experience by Sally Melville. Her first book is called "The Knit Stitch" and focuses just on that. It is great. Then, the second is "The Purl Stitch." I really used those books a lot when I first learned to knit. Also, if you haven't already done it, go to www.ravelry.com and sign up. It is a great knitting/crocheting site with lots and lots of info.

^Yes, Ravelry is a great place to go! :)

Also, I do encourage you to find a knit shop you feel comfortable in. Most will offer free instruction when you purchase yarn in the shop (and will help you design/customize a pattern, too.) Another great resource is Elizabeth Zimmerman books (I believe she has a DVD, too.) EZ is the 'godmother' of all knitters and invented such fabulous things as the cable needle (no more lost needles!) My fave EZ quote: "If stitches slip off the needle, keep calm. Slip them on again." How easy would life be if we all just keep calm!?!

As LLA said earlier, knitting really is quite easy. Remember that as with anything, practice is what develops skill! I do not know where I would be without my knitting!

harley, a friend gave me to EZ DVD for Christmas. I haven't spent enough time with it but it looks like it's worth owning.

I am digging this thread up... as I have gotten this insane drive to learn to knit lately. Not sure why I am having this sudden need, but I am thinking about going to Michaels and pick up some things to start. Anyone else knitting lately? (Maybe it's the cold weather that gave me the urge?)

Even though nobody expect this from me, I am not that bad in knittig...maybe I can help...but unfortunately my English is not the best...

I also can post the link to an original norwegian site ( with translations ) including some very helpful videos, if you like...found this site when I was looking for a special pattern for the scarf I actually knit...
