Hi everyone, I am new to this thread and I just love everyone's work. I am a SAHM and am looking for ways to create my own jewelry. I have read some of your suggestions as to where to buy my beads, but what I need to know is what items do I need to start? I don't know what tools, string, clasps, or things to start with. Is there a specific beginners kit that you can recommend me. I don't want things to sound repitious on here so please PM me with this info if you can please. I just have no idea where to start. There are craft stores around my area like Joanne's and Michaels. Also my style is chunky jewelry and I would love to make rings too. Thank you all.

if you want to start with a start kit, i believe michaels does sell some of those. or at least they used to before they remodeled their bead department.

I'd start off with just stretch string. That is the easiest, just one thing to buy, one thing to learn to do - tie a knot, which you already know how to do, just tie a bunch of them and then put nail polish or jewelry glue on it.

Then once you get a feel for it and are ready to spread your wings further, you can try stringing things on wire with lobster clasps and toggles, and learn to crimp and all that stuff.

The trick about that is, if you string things on cheap wire, you will be more likely to get kinks, especially with longer things, like necklaces.

But you can also get headpins and eyepins and pliers and learn how to make loops so you can put things on chains.

And you can get used to using pliers by using jump rings to add charms to charm bracelets that come already with a clasp.

Here's an eraser, which I have made it into a ring.

Hi everyone. There's been some amazing work posted here since I've been out of the loop for the past couple of months! My mother passed away and things have been very sad and hectic, and I also couldn't avoid H1N1 with the all the related travel and stress.

As a result, I haven't had the time or strength to design or make a thing, but I'm hoping to get motivated again. I'm always inspired the great artists I find here! Thanks so much to all of you for sharing your work! I've really enjoyed paging through and catching up.
