My DH is in LOVE with his mom's mini schnauzer that is salt and pepper colored. I know nothing about them but he's set on trading our old Golden Retriever in on a new Schnauzer he says! lol

^^^ We have one of each (DH has a Golden). I love both dispositions, they get along well, etc., but I have to say I'd trade the Golden for a hundred Schnauzers because of the shedding issue! In fact, if DH wants another big dog someday, it will be a Giant Schnauzer because they don't shed or drool. We keep our Golden pretty much shaved, but I'm still always covered with blond hair!

You've convinced me, I'm packing her bags right now!

my bf and i have been wanting a schnauzer for over a year now - we even have names picked out! our lifestyles are kind of busy though, so we don't think it would be fair to leave a little one home alone for too long. how do your schnauzers behave when you leave them at home for a couple hours? just curious.

illnirdhd - def go with a giant schnauzer if you want a big dog. my bf's old neighbors have one and she is an absolute sweetheart.

Gee: My Schnauzer is a momma's boy....so he cries a little bit when we leave, and when we get back he goes crazy crying and jumping on us!!!! But we leave him all day long in his 'house' (his crate) and he is fine!!!

Disclaimer- I personally know nothing about schnauzers first hand- but:

my DH's mom has a mini- as I stated previously- and "Baby" sticks her paws in the blinds while they are gone. She is around two and has "won" her freedom to roam the house while they're not home, no crate. Their only complaint is the blinds are bent up from her sticking her paws and little face out looking for them while they're gone. There is a loveseat with a high back in front of the window that she perches on. She doesnt have real seperation anxiety apparently.
I had a dog who ate couches and raided cabinets for tupperware, and MANY many many more terrible things. I'd take bent blinds any day! lol

Casino was in a crate when he was little. He never slept in there, but was in there all day while I was working. When I had a yard and got a doggy door, he was able to roam the house all the time - I think he was probably 2 then. He always slept with me. About 3 years ago, I had to break him of sleeping in my bed (ex didn't go for it), and got him a little bed that is next to mine now.

When I moved in with DH, his Golden was crate trained. He used to be pretty good, but got to be a little bit destructive when DH and I started getting more serious - when we would leave the house together, he'd get in the trash, pull stuff off the counters, etc. My Schnauzer was always good (although even at 8 years old, I can't leave dirty underwear on the floor or he will eat them), but we got a crate for him too. He quickly started going in there to lie down during the day and in the evenings. They're only locked in when DH and I leave home together. There have been a few days when we've crated them both all day, and they have been absolutely fine.

The funny thing is that Casino is definitely the boss of our Golden.

My parents' Schnauzers on the other hand are VERY secure in their crates. They go there during the day and sleep there at night. They're pretty funny actually, they like it there, and they like their doors closed, the lights off (crates are in an extra bathroom) and the radio on a country station. When they're tired, they want to go in their crates and not be bothered. On weekends when I'm home, I can't keep them out, they will actually pester me until I put them to bed during the day. I guess dogs just get used to things, and they get very scheduled.

He is fine now...he'll have this "can I come too?" look on his face when he realizes you're leaving, but when you tell him "no" or "stay", he'll just stand there and eventually turn around to go nap on the couch.

He was a terror when he was a puppy though. He would bark, howl, yelp, and scratch at the door when we were leaving. Then a few hours later, we'd come home to a potty training pad ripped to shreds, newspapers that were on a table we thought he couldn't reach ripped to shreds, food bowls tipped over, and etc. Eventually he grew out of that phase...but I think what helped a lot was letting him roam around more than 1 area of the house once he was potty trained I guess he really hated being cooped up and left alone in the kitchen!

I wish mine would behave, he tears stuff up when we leave him alone. he does not have a crate, instead he is tied in the kitchen on a runner so he has full roam of the kitchen. There is less for him to get into in there. I tried to trust him, but he never behaves He is such a troublemaker. He is hardly home alone, I work 5 days a week 9-5 but my husband only works 2-3 a week as a firefighter so maybe once or twice a week he is left alone for 8 hours.

I had to pull this up.. its too cute...
I have two Miniature Schnauzers name Einstein (almost 1, Salt and pepper) and Belle (6 month, black).

Long story short, my bf liked Schnauzers because he heard they are smart(hes childhood dog bite him). I was surfing for puppy all day long and he got tired so we got one. First couple days I was so devastated because it was so real and I was worried about having a puppy.
But now they are our loves. They come with us to everywhere and they get everything they want.

We got Belle for Einstein because he was so sad after my friends dog goes home.. Hes already neutered before we got her so they are not gonna have babies but Im very happy that he got companion.

Sometimes I see their puppy picture, I feel like they grow up so fast that I miss when they were babies...

Here is a funky pic of our 6 year old boy. I love my schnauzer, esp. for the fact that he is inside and doesn't shed!
