I read somewhere that Bob Barker now has donated a large sum of money for this project?

He offered 1.5 million dollars to move Billy to PAWS sanctuary. But since we won the right to keep OUR OWN elephant, his offer is null and void. The sanctuary would be okay if they had 24/7 vet care and state of the art medical facilities like we do. It would be okay if they did not run on donations and volunteers (not always professionals) and had a consistent supply of good food. They don't tell you that Billy would still be housed alone, away from the cows cause bulls and cows do not hang out together unless they are breeding. They accuse us of being elephant killers when an elephant of theirs just died there a week or so ago with no explanation. But we as keepers know, animals die. They do not live forever. Though elephants have the capacity to live to 50 or 60 they seldom do. Its like saying human beings can live to be 120 but very few of us do. Elephants in captivity AND in the wild usually live up to 30 to 40 years. And Asian elephants in the wild are dying younger and younger due to being poisoned, poached (shot or caught in snares) and starvation, etc.. Billy is living in the Ritz Carlton compared to his counterparts in the wild. Its horrible for them out there and THAT is what I wish these AR people would put all their efforts into - whats happening in their disappearing natural habitat. But you know what they say when we ask them this? They say we should let them all die. (!) They confuse natural extinction with artificial manmade forced extinction because of our interference. This is how truly ignorant they are.

^^^Ms. Tomlin got up at one point and began to yell and speak out of turn. If it had been any of us, we would have been thrown out of the room. But her being a celeb, of course, gets special treatment. We all started yelling at her to sit down, that what she was doing was not fair. She turned around to me and I yelled at her, "if you get to speak out of turn then so do we!" Whereas she yelled back at me -"fine then! go ahead!" But we got the last laugh. She was escorted back to her seat.

wow just found this thread...so glad u guys won and got to keep Billy!!

that must be maddening how the media was so biased, and how obvious lies were being spread about his treatment etc...I cannot even begin to imagine how frustrating that must have been for you guys! bagnshoo, i really admire your persistence and determination in all this..so glad you guys won and you can now sleep again.

too bad I don't live in LA anymore, i would totally go check out the zoo (and i would get to meet you @ the upcoming South Coast Plaza meet!). hopefully i'll be in the area for the next tpf meet
