She was let go years ago and is once again a disgruntled ex-employee. She is a broken record about our Asian elephant Gita's foot problems long ago that were indeed treated. In fact, she had surgery a few years ago that she completely healed from to prevent them from ever happening again. (She ended up passing away much later closer to her 50th birthday from a stroke.) Yet she never talks about the fact that all the other elephants we have had also do not have any foot problems whatsoever and never have. And Billy has no foot problems and never has. Does she talk about this? NO!

Oh My Gosh, I just saw the "60 Minutes" program that featured the "Elephant Orphanage". Didn't realize what wonderful, loving animals that elephants are!! I thought of you Shoo the whole time I was watching. Is there anything more you need us to do at this point??

I love that orphanage. Its such a labor of love. I wish they had something like that on a grander scale for asian elephants cause they are in bad shape in Indonesia. There are reserves but battling poachers is still a huge task.
Thank you for your support. The best thing for people to do is to keep contacting the Los Angeles City Council (lacity.org) and let them know how you feel. You don't have to be a resident. Just someone who supports our efforts at the zoo.
Thank you all so much. I cannot thank you enough.

I haven't posted but I've checked this thread to see how it's going for Billy. It's a shame that people take some incident out of context to get their way. Your affection for animals shines through in your posts, shoo.

So I guess we continue to contact the LA city council, hmmm?

So far so good.

Hello,

I too have been checking back for updates and am so sorry to hear about Billy. Congrats on winning this small step towards securing Billy's future stability. Poor thing. I can't even imagine how hard it would be to move such a large animal and how much stress an asian elephant such as Billy would endure.

Please know all of tPF is behind you sweetie. Keep up the good work for the zoo (and for Billy!).

I wish you all the best, Becky (BeautifulBasics)

p.s.

Can you please post the contact information (maybe email or phone?) in order for us to send our support for keeping Billy at the zoo.

In addition, maybe you could possibly include what exactly you wish for us to say that would be most helpful.

thanks guys. first go to lazoo.org and click on Billy and the Pachyderm Forest project. You will find all sorts of info as well as maps and drawings of what his new home will look like when completed. He has a pool now which he loves but will have an even bigger pool and a waterfall and a little river and 3.8 acres of land we will have to excercise him on. He is excercised now (though he frets about it sometimes) but this new yard will make it much more interesting and challenging for him. (elephants don't move much unless they HAVE to - like searching for food, water, salt, mud, etc.) Then, go to lacity.org and click on the city council, you get a list of all the council members. you can e-mail any or all of them and just let them know how you feel about keeping Billy in his home and that his renovation should continue.
Thank you all. And Billy thanks you too!

More info on the situation. Lots of good comments. Lots of support for actual animal experts, vs. the anti-animal kooks.

I hope this is resolved once and for all, and Billy STAYS.

Where is the elephant orphanage in the show? I may be going to Kenya this summer and read about an elephant orphanage in Nairobi. It looks like a great place and I will definitely visit and sponsor a baby ele.

(Yeah, Slash!)

. . . . he mentions Billy's four caretakers.

Are you one of them?

I was for the first 4 years of my career at the zoo. Now I am stationed at the nursery but as a 'demand' keeper am sent out all over the zoo.
