ETenebris or anyone else in contact with Laurel, do you have an update, please?
From the Petfinders site, it looks like at least two of the animals have been rescued by PETS ALIVE Corky and Lucky. There's a post on the Petfinders forum (absolutely heartbreaking going there) suggesting that the rescuers try to get media attention. Has there ever been a programme (say 30 minutes or so, or even 15minutes) focussing on the hard work of animal rescuers in the United States? |

Well, the deadline for the Lafayette shelter has passed; but if you are interested, you may still be able to save a young life if you call first thing tomorrow morning.
Most of the large number of animals in the WV shelter are still available for fostering or adoption, for just one more day, so wherever you live in the US (free transport is available), please try to help, if you can. There is a list of the most urgent animals and a link to the appropriate petfinder page, at the bottom of this page: http://forum.purseblog.com/general-d...-26149-23.html Also, please check out the www.petfinder.com website for pets on death row in your area. Thank you!

Piquedame, the contacts you have given may well prove invaluable. The poor animals at Paw Paw and Lafayette may not have been saved in time but there are many other animals in shelters all over the US that need help - maybe we can do better in future.
Meanwhile, there's still one day left for the innocent animals in Paw Paw, let's hope more get to be rescued. |

On petfinder, lilliesmum quoted this beautiful verse from the Bible:
"You shall not see your kinsman's ox or sheep driven astray without showing concern about it; see to it that it is returned to your kinsman. If this kinsman does not live near you, or you do not know who he may be, take it to your own place and keep it with you until he claims it; then give it back to him." _________________ Deuteronomy 22:1-2 Another poster commented:lilliesmom, this is beautiful. I was going to PM you but I think you need to be thanked publicly for this beautiful Bible verse which must be the guiding force for everything we do for the precious animals. Thanks again! |

Thanks passerby! I am slightly concerned that that verse was probably originally meant as instruction on not standing by while people steal from others, as sheep and oxen would, presumably, have been destined for the dinner plate; but it's still good advice! I don't think the New Testament ever advocates cruelty to animals, though. |

Chloehandbags, I went to Sunday School nearly 40 years ago, and have forgotten almost everything I learnt there about the OT and the NT.
Have you looked at the Petfinder list? On my screen, Corky and Lucky are now NOT listed as "rescued". What do you see on your screen? |

I've got the same thing, passerby!
Can you contact the shelter and ask what's going on? |

Extract of email today from Amber replying on behalf of Laurel:
If we had more dog house or crates that could be covered with a tarp, we could send them to people that have offered to foster but can not give the dogs shelter. I have no knowledge in the pricing! Corky was rescued and then they never responded back to our calls so now Homeward Trails is taking Koby, Harmony and possibly Corky. WE tried pointer rescue and they said hes not purebreed!! Everyone else thinks he is! Unquote Pic of Corky attached: http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/...?petid=6043237 Notes: Corky is a wonderful dog, typical of the hounds he is very friendly and loves everyone - adults and children. He is very good with all dogs he meets and even ignores cats. He loves to walk and loves attention. He is doing very well when he is inside - nice manners, quiet and is being crate trained. If you are interested in adopting Corky, please call the shelter at 304-496-9379. Unquote What's the average price of a dog house in the US? Thanks. |

Dog crates prices vary with size, but the ones I got for my dogs (about the size of Corky) were around $40 - $60. Not too much. I so wish I could adopt a couple of them.

It may have been too late to save some of the poor animals in Paw Paw and at Roicy Duhon in Lafayette, Louisiana but for the other great animals in shelters all over the US, there is still hope (without hope, what is there?)
So if you live near Louisiana, or know someone who might be looking for a pet to love, please consider these great animals at Roicy Duhon and take a look at them before 5 pm this Thursday, 6 July. As someone posted: "I can't save them all, but I can save one at a time--and so can you." Thanks. http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/...?petid=6579892 Lovely Lasses 2 - beautiful collie mix pups http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/...?petid=6579944 Luke Awesome 9 - Terrier mix Heartbreaking 3 - beagle terrier mix Absolutely Adorable - wheaten terrier mix Bandit kennel 11 - border collie Lover Boy - tabby More Babies 4 - collie Unclaimed Jewel 7 - black labrador retriever mix Notice Me 10 - Spaniel, Australian Shepherd mix Gorgeous Boy 8 - cocker spaniel mix |

Only two more days to go to help save the animals pictured in the post above:
Meanwhile, if you can’t adopt, foster or volunteer, how about helping to raise funds for the rescue organisations which are in desperate need of funds? Thank you. Besides the Lafayette & Paw Paw group, these are just a few of the groups (among the many local rescues in the US which depend on the generosity of the public) which could sure use help now: Louisiana http://www.animalrescueneworleans.com/ http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/arflafayette.html http://www.acadianahumane.org/ http://www.mycatranch.com/ http://www.apawspets.org/ Kentucky http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/graysoncountyhumanesociety.html Utah http://www.bestfriends.org/ http://gooddogrescue.rescuegroups.or...AnimalID=34091 Pic shown of Tangie - isn't she cute? Fundraising ideas: An idea that at least one organization (in the UK) has tried - (this will need the co-operation of a local bank): On returning from a vacation, people are sure to have some loose foreign currency – coins, notes. Ask them to donate these coins and when a reasonable amount has been collected, bring the collection to the bank and exchange it for US dollars. There are many fundraising ideas on the following site, here are a few (love the first idea below – it sounds fun ):http://www.fundraising-ideas.org/DIY/index.html Bring Your Dog To Work Fundraising A group of us worked together and took an idea to our employers, between the 10 of us that was 8 different companies. All but one agreed to let us do a "Bring Your Dog to Work Day". Each employee was able to bring his/her dog to work on the designated day provided they signed up in advance. Each dog cost $10 admission and the employees had to provide proof of current immunizations. All the money collected was donated to a local shelter. Three companies matched every dollar raised and one company bought a 10-pound bag of food in the name of each dog that was brought to work. Overall we raised over $7,500 and over 1,000 pounds of food. All the employees had a really great time too. There were some concerns with people having allergies, but except for one company, that wasn't an issue. For the one company that had a couple of allergy sufferers, of the 13 or so who said they would have a problem, 6 of them traded shifts or worked from home that day and the rest had a "Dog Free" zone in a conference room for the day. One of them was so taken by the idea that she took an anti-allergy drug and brought her neighbor's dog just so she could participate. We considered doing a "Cats At Work Day" at the request of many cat lovers and owners. However, we decided that keeping the kitties from declaring war in the offices was too big of a challenge. We're already planning ahead for next year and quite a few more people are interested in being involved and talking to their companies. We're hoping to make this as big as "Bring Your Child To Work", especially when you consider that the dogs ask less questions and have more fun! Source: Erica (Denver, Colorado) Y.C.J.C.Y.1.D. Fundraising The Rahway Elk's Lodge # 1075 came up with a good fundraising idea! In our grillroom we have 4 TV's. Above each of them we put up signs like Y.C.J.C.Y.1.D. People started to ask what does that mean? We tell them for $1.00 they can find out. After they pay the dollar we give them a card, and tell them they cannot tell anyone else. On the card is say's, "Your Curiosity Just Cost You One Dollar". All the money goes into our Handicapped Children's Fund. Contributed by Elk's Lodge # 1075 (Rahway, New Jersey) Make Believe Tea Party This is an idea that was used by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. No finger sandwiches, crumpets or fine china necessary! All you need are tea bags, invitations, envelopes and stamps. The concept: Send an invitation for a "Make-Believe Tea Party" to your friends, neighbors co-workers, etc. Send a tea bag (inexpensive per tea bag if you buy them in bulk - or you can try to get the tea bags donated) in an envelope along with a classy, yet catchy, invitation explaining that they are invited to a "make-believe tea party" on a certain day (Mother's Day, for example) at a certain time (high noon, for example). Explain that on that date and time, you will all enjoy a cup of tea (using the tea bag provided) in support of your cause (or in memory/honor of someone). Remind them that they can take part in this tea party while still enjoying the comforts of their own home! Ask each "guest" for a donation in return for "attending" this tea party. Provide a SASE for their convenience. The tea bag is theirs to keep whether they make a donation or not, but the hope is that your efforts will encourage them to send you a donation. You can either ask for a donation of a specified amount as the "cost" for "attending" this tea party, or leave the donation amount open-ended and up to the individual. Be sure to send a "thank-you" to those who make a donation. Source: Melissa M, Hartford, CT Cookbook Fundraising Have members of your school or club submit (preferably printed) their favorite recipe and either their children's favorite recipes or someone else in their family. Have someone put the recipes together and make a recipe book. My mother's auxiliary club did this as a fundraising project and it was a huge success. Many of the children use the cookbook to this day and now we are now putting together a "revised" cookbook. The cookbook we made contains tried and true recipes -- one of which they like for adults and one which they know their kids eat. The hardest part was having to re-type everything but I suppose people could email them in and the recipes could be cut and pasted into a word processing program. These were family recipes. For instance - my mom submitted a recipe that was from my great grandmother from Italy for homemade manicotti (how to make the shells and all). We were amazed at how many people were willing to share their family's recipe secrets! The fundraising cookbook was not hard cover - it was really just a "soft cover", the "cover" being just a thicker paper than what was inside. We went to a photocopy place to make the copies and stapled the pages together. Source: Liz M. |
