I know. Here's a reminder of how people can help, whether they can adopt/foster, or not: Laurel asks everyone to please take a look at WV - Paw Paw - Hampshire County Animal Control, on www.petfinder.com and see if there is just one animal, currently listed, in danger of being put down on the weekend of 7/1 - 7/2; that they could help. Also, please could everyone continue to check the site out, every once in a while and see if there might, possibly, be another one that they could make room for? So that these poor souls get a chance at a forever home and are not denied the chance and their lives, due to the vital need to make space for an abused/neglected dog, in desperate need of safe shelter. For kind-hearted animal lovers that want to help but are unable to rescue/foster, etc. The shelter could also use donations - in any form. Monetary donations could go towards gas (to get these guys out on a regular basis), basic vetting needs (in the form of vaccines, wormers, antibiotics, spays and neuters; to help place these guys in foster care [our biggest hold up]), crates and food (to provide to foster homes that open their doors for the emergency hold situations) - the list is endless. Monetary donations can be made to: Hampshire County Animal Shelter, P. O. Box 397, Springfield WV, 26763 Or, to their veterinary surgery, which is: Cacapon Valley Medical Center, Capon Bridge, WV Tel: 304-856-1700. Thanks! |

Here is the link to the LA shelter:
http://search.petfinder.com/shelterS...ort=&preview=1 ALL OF THESE ANIMALS ARE DUE TO BE KILLED, FIRST THING FRIDAY MORNING, SO MUST BE ADOPTED/FOSTERED BY: 5 PM ON THURSDAY JUNE 29th (tomorrow). The Lafayette shelter is very small (only 12 adoption kennels). Please also consider a darker coloured pet. Here is what the Lafayette shelter say about black Labs and other black animals (including kittens and cats); 'At Roicy, black dogs, are very common and very, very difficult to get out. If not for rescue, few would survive at Roicy. They are always passed over, never even receiving a glance or pat on the head from the public.'

Unfortunately, I think I have; on British TV shows, such as Pet Rescue. Black animals aren't considered to be as 'cute' by many people. Frankly, I think it's verging on racism! Also, as I've mentioned a few times before(!), I have a gorgeous Staffy cross girl and she is brindled tan on black, with a few white bits. When I take her out with my golden Lab and my (white) Bichon Frise, she almost always gets far less attention and admiring glances. But I know she's beautiful.

The 18 cats and dogs on death row at Lafayette are lovely. I have a soft spot especially for ginger cats & kittens - it's heart-rending.

I wrote this to Heather Mills McCartney:
Dear Heather, I wanted to urgently contact you about the millions of healthy, young, good natured cats and dogs that are destroyed in shelters in the US every year. Whilst I realise that this is nothing like as barbaric as the clubbing of seals, or the cat and dog fur 'trade' in China, I feel that, considering the US is such a rich, powerful and advanced country; this is completely unacceptable. I don't think this situation is due to a lack of people who care, as the US population has a high percentage of animal lovers; rather, many of the residents of the US seem completely unaware of the extent of the problem (particularly when in states other than their own). Also, many people seem to not know how the situation could be improved. At the moment, for example, there are 35 young, healthy, friendly animals waiting to be killed on Saturday, because the tiny, hugely overstretched Paw Paw shelter in WV, has to find the room to take in the animals of a mentally ill hoarder. Here is a thread on our forum, about it: http://forum.purseblog.com/general-d...-26149-23.html We do not seem to have as large a problem in the UK, presumably due to centralised animal charities, such as the RSPCA and DogsTrust who run a large network of shelters, throughout the UK. Whereas, in the states they seem to be trying to manage with tiny state run and/or independent, charity run, local shelters, which simply cannot cope. I am writing to you for help, as I greatly admire all you are doing for animals/have done for animals in the last few years. Thank you for your time. Kind Regards, x. I have a lot of respect for Heather, mainly due to her seemingly tireless work for animal and minefield charities and can't believe how badly the lying, petty, sniping, jealous British Press have treated her: http://www.heathermillsmccartney.com/response.php |

I know that of my two dogs, Kodiak (who is white / red) gets a lot more ooos and awwws than Quinn who is black and white (salt & pepper). But then again, I think he's more regal and striking too. But my Quinny girl is cute! And once people notice her she gets lots of love. I hope all these dogs (and cats) get adopted!!! |

Apparently, psychologists and behavioural experts believe that most people, of European origin (and also, many people of other races), are programmed to find fairer hair and skin 'cuter' and in the case of men, more desirable in women. This is, supposedly, due to a form of (normally subconscious) racism (due to centuries of European dominance [don't get me started!]) and also the fact that children tend to be fairer (so, fair = cute).
I hope so too, but so far, the process has been painfully slow and they're running out of time.

Chloehandbags, thanks for posting that message to Heather (afraid I've been misjudging her too)
An LA resident pointed out that Lafayette is in Louisiana, not Los Angeles. Can't edit the title or post though. Piquedame gave some useful advice to me via PM, here it is (I've taken the liberty of posting it without getting piquedame's permission first): From piquedame: here is what limited advice i can give. in all my years in media i have realized that people respond most to what they SEE. i don't know if anyone in the forum has tried contacting local television stations in the area. am i right in understanding that this is hampshire county west virginia? your best bet in such a limited time is probably to get a local television news crew down there ASAP to do a story. if you can get the community and local schoolchildren involved, so much the better. maybe have schoolchildren appealing for help on behalf of the shelter. i looked up some local media outlets in the hampshire county and pawpaw city areas. i am pasting some media-related links that maybe nearby PFers can follow up on: 1. West Virginia Public Broadcasting -- has a station, Channel 41, in Hampshire county; please try and contact this person and see if he can try and help you get in touch with a local reporter/news crew: Shawn Patterson Director of Communications 304-556-4908 Fax 304-556-4980 2. if you scroll down this page, you will get a listing of television stations and other media entities, including newspapers, in West Virginia. Please ask nearby PFers if there are any on this list which are near the shelter, and try to trace them through the local phone directories. http://www.earthstation9.com/index.html?west_vir.htm 3. here is a web forum that appears to be for pawpaw city/west virginia -- perhaps it might be good to post here as well http://www.city-data.com/forum/west-virginia/ 4. here is the contact info of an NBC affiliate in Maryland, which according to the dogster website is near Pawpaw: NBC25 13 East Washington St. Hagerstown, MD 21740 BY PHONE: (301) 797-4400 BY FAX: (301) 733-1735 to be honest pb i have no idea if any of this info is current or useful but i hope at least one of these leads is useful. i will keep researching and will check in often. good thing i am in bed with the flu for the next few days and will have time to do this! Unquote Get well soon, piquedame! |

No problem. I've had much more time to myself, today. Not so sure about tomorrow, though.
That's what I thought! But the petfinder website states Lafayette, LA. I assumed that either I was wrong, or that LA was also a shortening for Lafayette, can anyone confirm this?
Fantastic leads, there!!! Thank you and get well soon, piquedame!

hello again, some more media listings -- forgive me, i'm not really sure how it works in the US, but i am guessing the local telephone book might list the owners of the stations rather than the station call signs. again, apologies if this is not useful or current. Strongest AM radio stations in Paw Paw:
Strongest FM radio stations in Paw Paw:
TV broadcast stations around Paw Paw:
also, i know tPFers in the area probably have their hands full already, but from experience most media practitioners will latch on to a story if they can be sure of an interview or two. perhaps the tPFers can help arrange interviews with the owners of the shelter, or even say they'll be willing to be interviewed themselves? this way it's easier to "sell" a story, which is essentially what you would be doing. goodness i do feel helpless. i'll keep trawling the web for other resources. i'm so sorry i did not see this thread sooner. |

Piquedame, those leads are great - thanks a lot. And please don't beat yourself over not seeing the thread earlier. I hope you're feeling a lot better - if not, I might recommend to you some Chinese medicine (or maybe not
)

Thank you so much for your contributions, piquedame.
Does Laurel have all the info on the local radio and TV stations, already? |
