I truly believe that if everyone thinking of buying a pet shop dog would see what a puppy mill really is they would not support them any longer by giving them their hard earned money.
In my perfect world nobody would buy from pet stores, forcing the stores to go out of business, therefore forcing puppy mills to be shut down.
I don't mean to offend anyone, these are my opinions.

I agree with you, Marnee. The problem with “saving” the puppy mill puppies from the pet shops is by buying them, you are in fact supporting the mill/broker industry. I would never, ever give a single cent to pet shops because it perpetuates an economic system based on the mistreatment and abuse of animals and blatant manipulation of the heart strings. When someone “saves” a pet form a pet store, they may not be aware of it, but what they’re really doing is condoning a cruel industry where the only goal in mind is profit, and the cycle contines - rinse and repeat.

I know I posted about two weeks ago that I got my puppy report back...but that same day I got bad news about my other dog which is why it's taken me awhile to report back with the findings.

What I learned from the report:

Six other people who bought dogs bred by the same breeder have also requested this puppy report. Three of those 6 have healthy dogs. The other 3 name illnesses, but I'm not sure at what stage in their lives they became sick. (I'd assume that most people who request these types of reports have unhealthy dogs.)

In 4/03, there was an inspection and the breeder was in total compliance.
In 6/09, the inspection report said that the floor in one of the buildings needed repair.
In 11/09, the report said that the dogs were due for an annual visit from a vet.
In 11/10, there were no adults available for inspection.

It lists four different dates and how many dogs were on the premises each time.

In 8/00, 35 adults and 29 puppies
In 3/07, 130 adults and 50 puppies
In 6/08, 45 adults and 19 puppies
In 11/09, 38 adults and 29 puppies

There was "no AKC suspension information and no miscellaneous notes."

That's all!

^Thank you for posting that. Breaks my heart. There is no way that many dogs are being taken care of properly. Poor babies.

That is beyond heartbreaking. At one point they had 130 adults and 50 puppies on the premises! And a year later, they had a third of those dogs. I hope the decrease is because the place was raided.

What a great thread! I live in Norway where most puppies come from breeders. There is however a growing industy of smuggling i small dogs from eastern europe. Many die on their way over and they are often hidden inside carseats and worse...

Put me on the list of those recormending to get a dog from a breeder. I got mine from a breeder across the country. It was a long process: First she wanted an application where Id tell her how I came to the conclusion of getting my first dog, my plans for training it. Was I am active person who liked going for long walks? Would the pup spend much time alone? Where did I live (city, countrysite etc) It was also a long trip to get my dog, but it was the right dog! With a clean bill of health, all her shots, registrationcards and copies of her parents and grandparents rapports from HD and eye-tests.
I see the temptation of getting your dog right away. But this is a companion for (hopefully) 15 years... dont cut corners.

Oh well... Sun is shining and my dog is in her impatient, naughty mood. Time to go to the park and dig a hole.

I don't want to divert the topic but I think it's worth noting that it's not just dogs. I have a rabbit and while I know that's an unusual pet there are some other TPF rabbit people and the same thing goes on. Horrible breeding conditions, abuse, and uninformed buyers. Some breeders just kill the ones they don't want. I think too many people forget about what the animals they didn't buy are going through once they bring one into their home. If everyone checked on the sources of their pets and took action against subpar breeders, this problem would end in a year. :/ I'm guilty as well. I have a pet store rabbit because she picked me, but I still feel guilty about not checking where she came from and instead focusing on just taking her home.

Please adopt and don't shop!!! I volunteer for a local animal rescue and foster dogs for them. Several of them were mill dogs. I like to socialize them before they get adopted because most of them lived in a filthy cage their entire life, never slept on a soft bed, walked on grass or ate a treat. Most of them are terrified because they no nothing but cruelty from humans. I have had 2 of my fosters DIE ( one of liver disease and one from kidney disease) because of constant forced breeding, poor diet and never having seen a vet. I had another one require serious surgery. There are so many wonderful dogs waiting to be adopted from rescues. Even pure breeds. I have two rescue Yorkies ( one a former mill dog) and they are the best dogs I ever had!!!
