When I brought my dog in for her annual visit, she tested positive for Lyme disease. The Dr. put her on three weeks of antibiotics. I am kind of freaking out about it. Maisey is such a gentle, passive dog. She never really plays or begs for food so it is not like I noticed a change in her behavior. Do you think she has suffered? The vet said she probably was infected last fall.
It's no big deal for dogs so don't worry, just give the abx as ordered. One thing you can do to prevent this in the future is treat your dog prophylacticly for ticks with Frontline or whatever topical treatment your vet recommends.
My doxie had it as a little puppy. You are glad your doc caught it. Moosie went lame and couldn't be touched without screaming in pain. They couldn't figure out what it was and I was sure he was dying. Finally they gave him treatment for Lyme, even though it wasn't showing and he was much better within days. Since then, I do the flea and tick treatment and the lyme vaccine on both my little boys. They have long hair and are so close to the ground, they are a magnet for ticks if not treated.
