Default Can anyone tell me about their experience with electric pet fences?
I am wondering if this is a good alternative to the tie out for someone with out a fence? Is it safe? Does it hurt the pup? Is it effective/ easy to use?Can you tell me your experience and your pets reaction to it? pros/cons? TIA
We just got our little girl Jazzmine (Jazz for short) and I want her to be able to run around in the yard with out the leash. This is Jazz with my son Jaydon.

i had an electric fence for my GSD beauty when we had 2 acres of land....she did great with it and caught on within a day.....but she also knew when the battery was dead and would get off the property...lol....she is too smart....i didnt love the fact of a shock type collar but it was my only option with her....better than her getting hit by a car....a tie out has its own risks of entanglement for the dog....that being said i NEVER leave my dog outside when i am not home.....your boxer baby is so cute!!! i had one for 10 years and they are the BEST dogs....i will be getting another one for sure in a few years....she is too young do do the fence right now ...you will have to wait until she is probably a year old....if you dont have a fenced yard it may be your only option....

In one neighborhood we couldn't have a fence so we had the invisible fence installed. The training they provide and the owner follows up with takes a little time for several weeks. Some people just put the collar on and expect the dog to understand.

It worked beautifully with our boxer, who was an older rescue female. She never left the yard after we completed training. Also, we did not leave her unattended outside. There was too much traffic, kids and other dogs to take any chances.

I was told that boxers respond well to the invisible fence concept.

I have heard stories of some dogs running through electric fences. I've also heard of companies closing down and people being SOL when they needed maintenance. So I guess, do your reasearch when it comes to the company.

We bought the system that Petsmart sells in their stores... my DH installed it. We've had it about 2 years and it's been amazing. We have 2 Golden Retrievers that were trained within one day and have never run through it. We live out in the country and have 3 acres, so this was really the only alternative to give our dogs alot of space to run.
I highly recommend getting an electric fence!!!

I've heard mixed reviews. Some love it, but if you have a dog with a high prey drive, like me, they are useless and dangerous and no amount of training can change pure prey drive. Dogs with big-time drive can run through them easily, then refuse to come back through them to the house. But that's just our breed characteristics.

Looks like you have a Boxer? It's probably be great for those!

I have an electric fence, 2.5 acre range, that I've used for years with 5 little dogs. Just make sure the company trains the dog at the time of the installation. The trainer will post tiny flags so the dog will know their range. Also if you live in an area with coyote, fox etc. don't let the dog out after dusk unless you are with them. Maybe having a Boxer won't be a problem...big enough to defend themselves. I have horses which keep the pretators at bay.

i also wanted to add that my fence was a wireless system...you dont have to install it....you just set the range and it works wirelessly around the perimeter....we love it

Of course it hurts and you also have the risk of the collar malfunctioning. Also they probably won't want to recross the fence perimeter and get zapped again, so they're essentially locked out. I'd definitely consider other methods of containment before trying this one.

We have an electric fence, even though our property is fenced (we have about an acre). I think the system is great. Our newest four-legged baby (pictured below), is very skilled at jumping fences and would often jump our property fence to visit with the neighbors. The good thing is he never wandered off, and would always jump right back into our yard when he was done visiting. We had reservations about the electric fence at first, but felt installing it was necessary to avoid angry neighbors and dog fights. I felt very bad when he got zapped the first couple times. However, he quickly learned the signals (initial buzzing, and zapping when he got right up to the fence). Now he is trained to the point where he will stay back within 5 feet of the fence even without his collar.

We have an electric fence to keep Duke in our back yard. We had to have it because that animal can dig an escape tunnel so fast it's shocking. We've had very good luck with it....we installed it and with the exception of changing the battery on his collar one time in the last 3 years we've been maintenance free. And it does keep him in the yard. He learned right away that the little beeping sound on the collar meant he was too close to the fence.

Since you don't have a fence it will certainly keep your beautiful baby Boxer girl in but it won't keep other animals out so while she's little you may want to keep that in mind and keep an eye on her when she's outside alone.

I have a wireless system petsafe and so does our neighbor too and it works great. It was really easy to train both of my puggles and the doggie next door is a mixed lab and she learned in two days. It does shock if they go through it but once a dog experiences one shock we found they didn't want to go near the fence. We have had ours for almost two years and they don't go through the fence nor do we have the flags up anymore either so they are really smart about knowing where they can and can't go, plus if they do get to close the colloar will beep alerting them.

Another great thing is its portable too if you want to go out to the park or go camping bring the furbabies and they have a fence he he

The only thing I don't like is the batteries not knowing when to replace them, but they can be tested.

Thanks for all the great info! I think once she is a little older this will be the way to go. We may be able to get a fence in the spring/summer but she has already shown her digging skills! Thanks again all!
