Although I despise so many of the horrible things that are said about these dogs, some stereotypes are true. They really are so fiercely loyal and protective - although he was a pampered house pet, my mom says she always felt very safe when my dad was away on business because he was very protective of us.
My Tank is the complete opposite. We had a new dog walker we hired a few years ago before I became a stay at home mom. The new dog walker had never met Tank, the first time she came to the house. She used the keys we gave her and walked through the front door.

I've trained Tank to wait at the edge of the foyer until he's greeted by the guest entering, and that's exactly what he did. As soon as she called his name, he greeted her with his usual tail-wagging and kisses. So much for a guard dog! But it's amazing that even when I'm not home he still adheres to everything we've painstakingly trained him to do.

The only guard dog qualities Turbo has really comes out at night. He will be full on asleep and then happen to hear a noise...*BOOM*, up on his feet and out on the second floor landing in a flash, with head cocked listening intently. He'll bark a few times, listen again, and then go back to sleep. I feel very safe with my Turbo watching over me!

He won't bark any other time, unless my DH riles him up during play. I love his deep bark/play growl.

Beautiful pits on here!
Tank sounds wonderful!
For the record, Turbo is the only dog in the neighborhood that will sit on the curb before crossing streets while on a walk. And they give US dirty looks? Meh.

^ i know! we can leave our garage door open and Oliver won't come out of the garage. Everyone is shocked but he waits for the ok from us before he comes out of the garage

I read some where that's why people chose pit's to fight, because they are so loyal to their owners. they just want to please...

Yep, Turbo does the same thing. People always stare like they're shocked, funny.

TIA with the second half of your post.
